Abstract:

Better known as the post-war Rector of the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City, Abp Martin J. O'Connor was also a highly respected cultural ambassador between Washington and the Vatican. During the Second Vatican Council, Archbishop Martin John O'Connor was appointed as the President of the Pontifical Commission for Social Communication. Unlike other SVC appointments, it generally signified a promotion reflecting the growing scope of a media communications office he had overseen since 1948. In this iteration, O'Connor and his Commission had a directive to liase to both religious and secular press regarding what was being reported out of the Council.
