Description
An account of the resource
Donated to The Catholic University of America (CUA) by the Catholics of Great Britain and Ireland (residing in Rome) in 1889. According to the 1889 Year Book of CUA, “The well-known effigy of the Saint, on the Pincian Hill, was at first considered the best model to reproduce.” But Guglielmi wanted to aim higher. He travelled around Italy studying portraits of St. Thomas, “and the result is this superb work, which may well be considered the best likeness of the Angelic Doctor in existence.”

Description
An account of the resource
This first manuscript codex was created around 1460 in the north of France. This item is 31 cm tall, 24 cm long, and 8 cm wide, with 350 leaves on a combination of parchment and paper. This codex is the first half of St. Thomas Aquinas’s Commentary of Book IV of the Sentences of Peter Lombard (“On the Doctrine of Signs”). This is one of Aquinas’s earlier works, completed before his work on the Summa Theologiae. It was common for theologians of the time to write commentaries on the Sentences. This manuscript is particularly valuable, mainly because it is the oldest book we have of a work of St. Thomas Aquinas. There are a couple of visual components that make this item compelling, first being the combination of paper and parchment. Secondly, the ruling lines are still visible. Thirdly, there is a parchment leaf that might still have hair on it, but this is unconfirmed (3rd picture).

Description
An account of the resource
Although the Summa Theologiae is probably the most well known of St. Thomas Aquinas’s writing, it would be remiss not to feature our examples of his other works, which have each had their own influence on Western thought and Christianity. This first folio is In libros De anima expositio, or in English, Commentary on Aristotle’s De anima (On the Soul). This example is from 1501, published in Venice in Latin. A thin book compared to our other examples, coming in at only 75 leaves with several woodcuts throughout. What is also remarkable about this specific copy is the impressive amount of notes in the margins, which makes many of the pages extremely visually striking. Whoever studied with this copy certainly had a lot to write about! 21.5 cm long, 31.75 cm tall, and 2 cm wide with a contemporary green cover.

Description
An account of the resource
This manuscript is from 1478 and was created in Austria. It is a copy of St. Thomas Aquinas Quaestiones de duodecimi quodlibet, and it is 30 cm tall, 23 cm long, and 5 cm wide. Quaestiones is a series of questions and answers, that prominent Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper describes as a “fruit of the free discussions which Thomas was so fond of launching at the university, wherein those questions are raised which stirred his age”. The book is handwritten with black ink on paper in Gothic cursive, and it is rubricated. There are also red and yellow initials throughout. The cover is black leather. In contrast to MS 200, this manuscript has a difference in material and production technique, with this being solely written on paper, as opposed to parchment and paper, and this book being rubricated along with yellow and red initials.

Description
An account of the resource
This folio is from our Clementine Library, part of the personal library of Pope Clement XI (1700-21). A very large item, it is 32 cm long, 44 cm tall, and 1 cm wide. Not a very thick book, it only contains 12 leaves of paper, and it was composed in Latin. Printed during his Pontificate in Rome in 1718, this work is a synthesis of the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas into small bite-sized pieces, compiled by his nephew, Cardinal Annibale Albani, with an introduction by Nicolaus Origo. This work also has a beautiful red cover embossed with the golden coat of arms of Cardinal Albani.
