Sports coverage has been a mainstay of the Tower since its inception, cataloging the trials and triumphs of Cardinals over the years.

January 9, 1936 Tower

Covering the triumphant Cardinal football team returning to campus. On January 1, they defeated Ole Miss (20-19) to win the Orange Bowl.

Leather CatholicU football helmet with faded number “38”, ca. 1940s. 

Thomas Whelan, Sr. (BA ‘33) was a 1932 Honorable Mention All-American football player from CatholicU. In the 1950s, Whelan’s son (Jr.) was gifted this helmet by long-time CatholicU Athletic Director, Eddie La Fond. The younger Whelan wore this helmet while playing football as a child in the 1950s.

May 1, 2009 Tower

The women’s lacrosse team has had a dominating record since 2008, and the Tower has chronicled their progress over the years. In 2009, the team would win the Landmark Conference for the second year in a row. The Cardinals have dominated the Conference since then, with championships in 2010-2012, 2014-2019, and 2021-2022!
